West Kootenay

The Kootenay Golf Trail awaits

Tour the west for great golfing

New golf courses seem to be multiplying by the minute in the Kootenay Rockies. Each golf course in the region has its own charm and unique aspect to it, making the Kootenay Rockies a hot spot for golf enthusiasts from all over the world. Here is a look at the latest news in golf course developments and some great courses to check out on the west side of the region.

Exciting developments

Red Mountain Resort in Rossland is in the process of obtaining approval to begin construction of a new golf course, to be named The Golf Club at Red Mountain. The head designers for the proposed golf course are Annika Sorenstam—70-time LPGA championship winner—and Thomas McBroom, a leading golf course architect in Canada. Together they are designing the layout for the proposed 18-hole, par 71 golf course, set to begin construction in the spring of 2009. Sorenstam and McBroom aim to design a course that places the emphasis on old-fashioned shot-making and skill, rather than on power and length.

Another development underway in Rossland is Redstone Golf Resort. A new 18-hole golf course is the focal point of this golf resort, which will also feature a hotel, training facility and residential properties. Cary Fisher, a managing partner with Redstone Golf Resort, said 10 of the 18 holes have been completed ahead of schedule.

“We decided that we wanted to upgrade the old course, which was built in 1927,” said Fisher. “We accelerated the process and last October, with a week left in the season, we gave everyone a preview of the 10 holes that we built. Then we shut down the old course and started working on it.”

Fun courses to visit

Little Bear Golf Resort in Castlegar is a must-play course if you are in the area. It is a par three, nine-hole course with 18 tee boxes—and it is a course that everyone will enjoy. Sean Jang, the general manager of Little Bear Golf Resort, believes that golfing should be relaxing, fun and affordable for everyone.

“It is $10 anytime you want to come and play,” said Jang. “For me, if it is not fun, then there is no point in playing.”

Jang said that the Little Bear course is challenging for advanced players because of the fairways’ short distances, but he said most of his customers are beginners, families and people looking to have a good time.

“It is very beginner-friendly but it’s also really challenging for better golfers because of the short distances,” said Jang.

Granite Pointe Golf Club in Nelson is another golf course worth a visit while touring the region. An 18-hole, semi-private facility, this course is five minutes from downtown Nelson and offers spectacular views of Kootenay Lake and a nearby glacier.

Travis Mann, the head golf professional and general manager for Granite Pointe Golf Club, spent his childhood on the golf course and takes pride in his course.

“The views from the course are absolutely second to none,” Mann said, “and our proximity to town is a convenience factor too, as it is perfect for the after-work and before-work crowd, locals and visitors, because it is minutes from everywhere you want to go in Nelson.”
